How FoldSync processes personal data when you use the macOS app.

Last updated: 23 July 2026 · Controller: Pixel Project

1. Controller

The controller for personal data related to FoldSync is:

Pixel Project
Website: pixel-project.de
Email: foldsync@pixel-project.de

2. Overview

FoldSync is a native macOS backup app. Backups, snapshots, jobs, and credentials are processed locally on your Mac or on destinations you choose. FoldSync does not operate a FoldSync user account or a central FoldSync server that stores your backup files.

FoldSync does not track your usage (no Google Analytics, no advertising SDKs, no product telemetry).

3. What data is processed?

3.1 On your device

3.2 Destinations you configure

During a backup, file contents are transferred to destinations you set up (local folder, external drive, SMB, SFTP, Nextcloud, or GitHub). Those providers process data under their own terms. FoldSync only sends data to destinations you explicitly configure.

3.3 Optional iCloud settings sync

If you enable iCloud sync in Settings, selected app settings may sync via your personal Apple iCloud account. Apple is responsible for iCloud. You can turn this off at any time.

3.4 Mac App Store purchases

Subscriptions and purchases are handled by Apple (StoreKit / App Store). Payment data is processed by Apple, not by FoldSync. Apple’s privacy policy applies.

3.5 Support requests

If you email us (for example via in-app feedback), we process the information you send (message, optional attachments, technical details such as app and macOS version) to respond to your request.

4. Purposes and legal bases

5. Retention

Local app data remains until you delete it in the app or remove the app / its data from your Mac. Keychain items remain until deleted or removed by the system. We keep support emails only as long as needed to handle your request and meet any legal retention duties.

6. Sharing

FoldSync does not sell your backup data. Data may be shared only:

7. Security

Credentials are stored in the macOS Keychain. Optional file encryption uses AES-GCM (CryptoKit) with local key material. GitHub destinations intentionally receive unencrypted plain files so Git can work — protect sensitive repositories accordingly (e.g. private repo, limited token scopes).

8. Your rights

Where GDPR applies, you may have rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, portability, and objection, and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Because FoldSync stores backup data locally or on your destinations, you can usually inspect and delete most data in the app, Finder, or at your destination provider. Contact us at foldsync@pixel-project.de.

9. Children

FoldSync is not directed at children. Use the app only if you meet system requirements and have the rights to the data you back up.

10. Changes

We may update this policy when needed. The version published on this page with the date above is the current one.
